Last few pictures of the year 2013.  Mundane, sober, anti-climactic, mediocre pictures.  The tree begs for significance where none exists.  A tree at night stands in the dark under unseen stars, unable to lie down to sleep, unable to move.  Oakland streets on new year's eve appear empty.  Who drives in the daytime here on new year's eve?  If only walkers would walk on sidewalks in number, or bicyclists or people on horseback appear with hats on their heads, hands gesturing, mouths with corners angled toward the sky, hair and moustaches trimmed, shiny shoes, healthy knees, change in their pockets, gold rings on their fingers, skin free of blemish, frontal lobes in synch with the local cultural ideology, trousers neatly pressed, joints well oiled, discs unimpinged, auricles and ventricles pumping together in time, watches bracing wrists, eyes aglow with visions of bliss in the world.  Someone's corner store sells garden supplies, in this world.  Colorful surfaces instead of war torn gray bark?  A line of chirping magpies strung up above the highest branch?  Singing voices of children at play in this beautiful park where love can be felt on every hard surface, softening hearts, lowering shoulders, changing objects all around into perfect forms.  No one enjoys fear.
